How to read a tide chart for fishing
The tide table tells you when the water is high. It does not tell you when to fish. Those are different questions.
Ask ten surfcasters when to fish a spot and you will get ten answers built from the same raw material: a NOAA tide prediction, and years of watching what the water actually did. This is a guide to closing the gap between those two things faster.
Height is not current
This is the mistake that costs beginners the most fishing time. A tide chart predicts water level — how many feet above the datum the surface sits at a given moment. What catches fish is current: water moving horizontally, dragging bait with it.
The two are related but they are not the same, and they are not in phase. In an open coastal basin, current runs fastest around mid-tide, roughly three hours after a high or low, and slows to nothing at the extremes. That is why the tide graph on ReelConditions matters less than its steepness. Look for where the curve is falling or rising most sharply — that is your fishing window.
The rule of twelfths
Over a six-hour tide cycle, water moves in roughly this proportion each hour: 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 3/12, 2/12, 1/12. Half the total water movement happens in the middle two hours. This is the whole reason "fish the middle of the tide" is such durable advice, and it is the same curve ReelConditions uses to interpolate between highs and lows.
Slack water is not always dead water
Conventional wisdom says do not bother at slack. Mostly true, with real exceptions:
- Structure that only fishes at slack. Some rock piles and bridge abutments run so hard mid-tide that you physically cannot hold bottom. Tautog and sea bass anglers often work exactly the window everyone else skips.
- The turn. The fifteen minutes as current reverses can concentrate disoriented bait against a structure edge. Many guides consider the first push of new current the single best moment of the cycle.
- Back bays with long lag. A marsh creek can still be draining hard an hour after the ocean has gone slack.
Spring and neap tides
Around the new and full moon, sun and moon align and their tidal pulls add together. You get spring tides — larger range, higher highs, lower lows, and stronger current. Around the quarter moons the two pulls partly cancel and you get neap tides, with a compressed range and gentler flow.

Note that "spring" has nothing to do with the season — it comes from the water springing up. Spring tides happen roughly twice a month, all year.
Your spot has an offset, and you have to find it
NOAA's prediction is for a specific gauge. Your rock, jetty or creek mouth is somewhere else, and the water arrives there on its own schedule. In constricted places — a canal, a breachway, the back of a marsh system — the current can lag the published height prediction by an hour or considerably more, and can still be running hard well after the chart says the tide has turned.
The only way to learn your offset is to write things down. Three trips of "chart said high at 4:12, the rip actually turned on at 5:30" and you own information no forecast can give you. Wind changes the water level, and the chart does not know
Tide predictions are purely astronomical. They assume no weather. In reality:
- A sustained onshore blow can push the actual water level well above prediction and hold the low tide from ever fully draining.
- A hard offshore wind can do the reverse, emptying a bay below the predicted low.
- Wind against tide stands waves up steeply and makes a manageable inlet dangerous — this is the classic small-boat trap, and it is worth taking seriously.
- Storm surge from a passing low can add feet, not inches.
This is why the disclaimer at the bottom of every page on this site is not boilerplate. Astronomical predictions are excellent for planning and inadequate for navigation.
A workable planning routine
- Pick your two or three best days from the seven-day ratings.
- Open the hourly chart and find where the tide curve is steepest, not highest.
- Check whether that steep section overlaps dawn, dusk or a solunar major. Overlap is what you are hunting for — that is when a good day becomes a great two hours.
- Apply your own spot's lag.
- Check the actual NOAA marine forecast for wind and seas before you commit.
